CrossFit is a mix of gymnastics/body weight movements, cardio, and weightlifting expertly combined into a Workout of the Day (WOD).
In class, you may be running, rowing, doing burpees, squats, deadlift, presses, flipping tires, climbing a rope, and so many other fun movements in all kinds of combinations. You (and your body) will never get bored!
The need of an Olympic athlete and your grandmother vary by degree and not kind. Each workout can be adjusted to your individual fitness and ability level while still ensuring you achieve the stimulus of each class.
